The Battle For Cleurie Quarry, France Sept. - Oct. 1944
In the Vosges region the US 3rd Infantry Division (Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment), were temporarily halted by a German strong point at L’Omet quarry in the Cleurie river valley.
On the 2nd of October, Platoon Sergeant Audie L. Murphy led a patrol in ambush of a German machine gun position which was holding up their progress... It was for this action that Murphy was recommended for his second Silver Star within a three day period. Murphy went forward alone and radioed the co-ordinates of the German positions to the mortar crews in the rear... he maintained this position for over an hour while under continuous fire from the Germans. Eventually the mortar fire overcame the German position resulting in fifteen killed and thirty five wounded.
